At-Home MTC Experience
“The ultimate missionary training center is in our homes . . . our homes are the ultimate setting
for learning, living, and becoming.”
—Elder David A. Bednar
“Prepared to Obtain Every Needful Thing”
April 2019 General Conference
We are excited for your missionary’s online MTC experience to begin in a few weeks! As you
prepare, please read the following information about what to expect and how you can best help
your missionary. We know that you will all be blessed as you participate in this experience
together.
What to Expect
At-home Training
During this at-home training, your missionary will be fully engaged in study, practice, and
preparation each day. This will include approximately six hours of teacher-directed online
classroom training, and also personal study, online companionship study, and other assigned
activities.
A few days before the scheduled MTC start date, your missionary will receive an email from his
or her MTC teachers. This email will share detailed information about online training, including
the daily schedule, the other missionaries in their training group, and any tasks that may need to
be completed before the start date. Please remind your missionary to reply to this email.
Companion
Missionaries should do their best not to be alone. Having a companion helps to keep missionaries safe spiritually and physically. In most cases, a companion will be a family member. Family circumstances may require that missionaries be alone in their training room or in their home during scheduled training activities, but it is especially important that they have a companion whenever they leave home.
Your missionary will be assigned an online companion and will participate in a variety of
activities and study with this companion both inside and outside of scheduled training activities.
Missionary Standards
Once at-home training begins, elders and sisters are considered full-time missionaries. As full-
time missionaries, they are expected to give their full efforts and focus to their preparation. They are expected to follow all missionary standards, including the approved schedule and dress and
grooming standards found in Missionary Standards for Disciples of Jesus Christ (see sections 2.4 “Daily Schedule” and 4.9 “Dress and Grooming”). While in at-home training, missionaries serve under the priesthood stewardship of their stake president. He can help answer specific questions.
How You Can Help
Before Training Begins:
• Read together Missionary Standards for Disciples of Jesus Christ.
• Plan to identify and prepare a training environment where your missionary can have the Spirit
for daily guidance. Remove anything that may be a distraction.
Family
On Sundays, preparation days and outside of scheduled missionary training activities, missionaries should look for opportunities to share what they are learning with their family
members. They may practice teaching their family members, and they may study with them and
share principles from the scriptures and Preach My Gospel. Missionaries are encouraged to join
appropriate family activities on preparation days and Sundays. See section 3.6.1 “General
Recreation Standards” and section 3.6.2 “Unauthorized Activities”.
In addition, joining some family activities may be appropriate on preparation days and Sundays.
